🔄 How to Change the Primary Domain in cPanel

The primary domain in cPanel is the main domain associated with your hosting account. Changing it is useful when rebranding, migrating, or updating your business identity.

📋 Prerequisites

• 🔑 Root Access to WHM (necessary to modify accounts).

• 🌐 New Domain Registered and pointed to your server.

• 💾 Full Backup of the website and databases (to prevent data loss).

🛠️ Steps to Change Primary Domain

Step 1: Log into WHM

• Open your browser and go to:

  https://your-server-ip:2087

• Enter your root username and password.

Step 2: Open List Accounts

• In the WHM search bar, type:

  List Accounts

• Select it from the results.

Step 3: Locate the Account

• Find the cPanel account linked with the current primary domain.

• Click the “+” icon next to the account to expand options.

Step 4: Modify Account

• Click Modify Account.

• Scroll to find the Primary Domain field.

Step 5: Enter New Domain

• Remove the old domain name.

• Enter the new primary domain name.
  ⚠️ Important: Do not change the username — otherwise, databases and configurations may break.

Step 6: Save Changes

• Scroll down.

• Click Save.

• WHM will apply the change and update the account with the new domain.

⚠️ Things to Keep in Mind

• Email addresses under the old domain will stop working unless recreated under the new domain.

• If your website uses absolute URLs (hard-coded links), update them in your CMS or configuration files.

• You may need to update DNS records for the new domain.

• SSL certificates must be reinstalled for the new domain.
